On 21 December 2025, specialists from the Department of Social, Humanitarian, Educational and Career Guidance Work organised a screening and discussion of the topical video ‘Our Hryvnia’ for students of the educational institution within the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

While watching the videos, students learned about the historical facts of Ukraine's national currency's origin and development. Participants learned that the name of the national currency, hryvnia, comes from the ancient piece of jewellery ‘hryvnia,’ which was used as far back as the times of Kyivan Rus.

Particular attention was paid to the events of 2 September 1996, when the hryvnia officially became the national currency of Ukraine. It was also noted that the first banknotes with denominations of 1 and 2 hryvnia were printed in Canada and the United Kingdom, and their delivery to Ukraine by sea took about a month. Between 2 and 16 September 1996, karbovanets were exchanged for hryvnias and kopecks.

During the discussion, the students expressed their opinions on the current development of the state's financial system. In particular, it was noted that the introduction of the Electronic Payment System (EPS) of the National Bank of Ukraine is an important step that ensures the convenience and smooth operation of interbank settlements in modern conditions.

Thus, the event helped students understand that the formation of Ukraine's monetary system is a gradual transition from Soviet banknotes to its own stable and sovereign national currency, which is an important symbol of the state's independence.
