On 29 October 2025, Daria Riabtseva and Maryna Puzyr, teachers at the Department of Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Fundamental Disciplines, conducted an interdisciplinary round table for students on the topic ‘Human Factors and Miscommunication in the Cockpit: How Communication Mistakes and Miscalculations can Lead to Incidents’.

The purpose of the event was to demonstrate how linguistic inaccuracies and mathematical errors can impact flight safety, develop professional communication skills in English and critical thinking, and illustrate the connection between English and mathematics in aviation practice.

During the meeting, students discussed the role of the human factor in aviation incidents, watched a video clip of Korean Air Flight 6316, completed practical tasks to find communication errors, and solved math problems involving unit conversions.

Teachers cited real-life examples of errors in aviation history – Gimli Glider (1983), Mars Climate Orbiter (1999), and Sikorsky S-76 (2014) – to show how even a minor measurement error can lead to an accident.

At the end of the round table, the participants concluded that accuracy in language and calculations is the shared responsibility of the crew, and that discipline and attentiveness are the best guarantees of flight safety.
