As part of a law awareness initiative, there was a presentation on the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) — one of the key bodies of the Council of Europe that oversees compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights.

The event covered such topics as:

  • ECHR’s structure and powers;
  • mechanisms for submitting individual complaints;
  • practical aspects of case review; and
  • the role of this court in ensuring the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens.

Particular attention was paid to the analysis of the case of ‘Kyiko, Vovk, Morozova, Tunik, Zhukov and Zhukova, Viacheslavova v. Ukraine’, which raised a number of issues related to:

  • the violation of the right to a fair trial (Article 6 of the Convention),
  • the right to respect for private and family life (Article 8),
  • the inappropriate treatment and abuse of power (Article 3).

The consideration of this case is a striking example of the significance of international human rights protection mechanisms and the need to align national legislation with European standards.

The ECHR remains a key instrument in the fight for justice, especially in cases where national judicial systems prove ineffective or biased.
