On 25 February 2025, Dariia Riabtseva, the teacher of the Department of Management, Social Sciences, Humanities and Fundamental Disciplines, conducted a practical class with the use of quest technologies on the topic ‘At the Airport’ for the first year students majoring in ‘Air Navigation’, educational and professional programme ‘Air Transport’. The lesson was in 2 stages, each of which involved the students’ active participation in various activities aimed at developing their language skills.

The class started with small talk about an airport and its structure, during which students recalled already known words and concepts related to the topic.  The teacher presented the key objectives for the lesson and explained the format of the quest. The students learned new terms through an interactive presentation. They completed exercises to match the terms to their definitions. Students also played a ‘word explosion’ game, where they need to name as many words on the topic as possible in a limited time. They listened to several dialogues related to the typical situations at the airport (check-in, passport control and baggage claim), completed the test on comprehension of the audio, answered questions about the content and explained the meaning of certain phrases.

At different stages of the quest, students scanned the QR-codes, which contained task of various types: multiple-choice quizzes, tasks to fill in the gaps in the text, airport situations that had to be solved in pairs or teams. Each team gradually passed all quest’s stations, receiving new hints and tasks. The students were assigned the roles of airport employees and passengers. They simulated dialogues at check-in counters, passport control, and baggage claim. Special attention was paid to the correct use of professional terminology and pronunciation.

The quest lesson proved to be an effective way of active learning. The students both learned and use new vocabulary in practical situations. The QR-quest format improved their motivation and made a class more dynamic. The use of role-playing games allowed them to master professional communication.
